“Mashrouy” The Launchpad that Ignited Entrepreneurship in Sudan
Almost
a decade since its inception in 2013, Mashrouy is widely regarded as the
catalyst for promoting and increasing awareness around entrepreneurship and
dispelling its cultural taboo.
Khartoum
(March 31, 2021) –The meagreness in
economic growth following the secession of South Sudan in 2011 contributed to a
growing problem of graduate unemployment that has led many to consider
different options. Despite the hardship, many were reluctant to peruse the
entrepreneurial route primarily due to the social stigma attributed to non-professional
career paths.
Mashrouy,
which means “My Project”, was co-founded by the British Council and Ahmed Amin,
a prominent businessman in Sudan. The program was designed similarly to popular
shows such as the UK’s Dragon’s Den and The Apprentice in the US but with a
greater purpose of dispelling the negative cultural and social connotations
around entrepreneurship. Ahmed has a particular interest in the fields of
Sudanese economic development, youth entrepreneurship and family business,
delivering keynote presentations and speeches at a number of universities,
associations, and local and regional events.
The
show was and continues to be a success in more ways than the creators could
have imagined. Mashrouy also caught the attention of several international
media heavyweights with the Guardian,
BBC,
and NY Times
all covering the show’s impact on the youth of Sudan.
Today,
more and more Sudanese youth are considering entrepreneurship as a viable path
to both a career and a better livelihood. Many international agencies have also
been encouraged by the rise of entrepreneurship and have since come into Sudan
to support with funding, capacity building and technical support.
In
an interview with the BBC, Mr. Ahmed Amin said "We want to reach millions
of Sudanese homes, to put a spotlight on entrepreneurship, to shed light on
what is possible and to help move people towards giving life to their
ideas".
